The Little Philharmonic

Target groups: secondary music school and music universities students, Warsaw Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra artists

The Little Philharmonic is a joint label for concert projects on which Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir musicians collaborate with students from secondary music schools and music universities. Professionals and teenagers jointly form an orchestra which prepares programmes for selected Sunday concerts for children. From the beginning the orchestra is conducted at rehearsals and during concerts by assistant to Warsaw Philharmonic’s artistic director. Intensive rehearsals are held during the last ten days before each concert. Section leaders (Warsaw Philharmonic instrumentalists) also rehearse the programme in small groups.

In what ways have these projects been implemented so far? Let us sum up.

Three Warsaw-based secondary music schools (popularly known by their street address as Miodowa, Krasińskiego and Bednarska) as well as the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music have taken part in “The Little Philharmonic” project over the last two concert seasons. All the eight concerts were conducted by Paweł Kapuła, and the concert masters were: Maria Machowska (in November 2016, March 2017 and March 2018), Krzysztof Bąkowski (in December 2017) and Aleksandra Kupczyk (March 2019), the regular concert masters of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra.

Twelve members of the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir sang in the Little Philharmonic Choir, and more than 50 instrumentalists of the Philharmonic’s orchestra played in the project’s instrumental ensembles. All the participants of the projects have praised them as an engaging challenge and an experience that helped them enrich their artistic activity. The audience followed these concerts with much interest, admiring the combined energy of youthful enthusiasm and professional experience.
