Łukasz Borowicz

Lukasz Borowicz is the Artistic Director of the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Born in Warsaw in 1977, he studied with Bogusław Madey at the Fryderyk Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw where he received a doctorate in conducting under Antoni Wit. He was an assistant conductor to Kazimierz Kord at the Warsaw National Opera, to Antoni Wit at the Warsaw Philharmonic and to Iván Fischer at the Budapest Festival Orchestra. In 2006 he was appointed Chief Guest Conductor of the Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra. He held several grants from the Polish Ministry of Culture and is a prizewinner of four conducting competitions: in Trento (1999), Athens (2000), Porto (2002) and Bamberg (2004). His awards include the ‘Passport’ Award from the Polityka magazine (2008), Coryphaeus of Polish Music (2011) and C. K. Norwid Prize (2013).

Lukasz Borowicz has appeared as a guest conductor with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Scottish SO, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, Wiener Volksoper, Orchestra of the Opera in Marseilles, I Pomeriggi Musicali of Milan, Prague Symphony Orchestra and most of Polish symphony orchestras.

Lukasz Borowicz has conducted at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro (the Haydn Orchestra with Ewa Podleś) and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (Moniuszko’s Halka with the NDR Radiophilharmonie).

He made his operatic debut with Don Giovanni at the Warsaw National Opera in Warsaw followed by Orfeo ed Euridice, Midsummer's Night Dream and The Rite of Spring. Further operatic credits include: Don Giovanni, Eugene Onegin and Halka (Kraków Opera), Die Zauberflote, Rusalka, The Bluebeard’s Castle and Dido and Aeneas (Grand Theatre in Łódź), King Roger (ABAO Bilbao). He has conducted ballet performances at the Warsaw National Opera (Swan Lake, La Bayadere). His extensive discography includes recordings with Ewa Podleś, Piotr Beczala, Mariusz Kwiecien and Samuel Ramey.

His work with the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra has led to the acclaimed reappraisal of several neglected operas. These include live performances and recordings of Flis by Moniuszko, L’Hirondelle inattendue by Laks (released by EDA Records), The Legend of the Baltic by Nowowiejski and released by the Polish Radio Maria by Statkowski, The Adventures of King Arthur by Bacewicz and Monbar or the Filibusters by Dobrzyski. He has furthermore recorded Giovanna d’Arco by Verdi with the Poznań Philharmonic.

Lukasz Borowicz’s commitment to rare operatic repertoire is also evident in his ongoing work with the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival in Warsaw - Cherubini's Lodoïska, Spohr’s Berggeist, Weber’s Euryanthe, Donizetti’s Maria Padilla, Montemezzi's L’amore dei tre re and the Simone Boccanegra by Verdi.

His collaboration with Piotr Beczala on the Deutsche Grammophon recording of Heart's delight - Songs of Richard Tauber (with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) was met with critical and public praise.

Lukasz Borowicz’s symphonic recordings include the Complete Violin Concertos by Bacewicz for Chandos (with Joanna Kurkowicz) and the Complete Symphonic Works by Andrzej Panufnik (Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Konzerthausorchester Berlin for CPO).

His recordings have been awarded two Diapason d’Or Prizes, two Fryderyk Prizes and were nominated for the Midem Classical Awards (2008) and the Preis der Deutschen Schalplattenkritik (2009). They also featured as the BBC Orchestral and Opera Choice on several occasions.
