In an interview in which he commented on the premiere of A Sea of Dreams Did Breathe on Me. Songs of Reverie and Nostalgia (commissioned by the Fryderyk Chopin National Institute to conclude the series of concerts marking the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth), Krzysztof Penderecki revealed that he began his work on the piece with a long and attentive read of over six thousand (sic!) pages of Polish poetry from the 19th and 20th centuries.

He stressed his particular admiration for the poetry of Miciński, Wierzyński, and Wat; he took great care when selecting the final texts for this monumental vocal‑ symphonic fresco (as the author himself termed it), for the most part avoiding the most popular poems of the national bards (with the exception of some fragments from, for example, The Crimean Sonnets and Chopin’s Grand Piano), and instead allowed himself to be guided by his own, deeply personal understanding of poetry. The work premiered on 14 January 2011 at the Warsaw Philharmonic, and was conducted by Valery Gergiev. It was also here that the composer’s Polonaise was staged for the first time (under the baton of Jacek Kaspszyk) – a long‑ awaited work written especially for the inauguration of the 27th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in 2015.

Philip Glass, one of the icons of the American composing scene over the last half a century, explained how in one of his most recent works (2015) – the Double Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra – he strove to subvert traditional idea of a concerto based on the opposition between a soloist (in this case – soloists) and an orchestra. Instead, he wanted the orchestra to be an extension of the piano and to double the piano sounds. Critics have also pointed to the composer’s departure from his idiom (yet still easily recognisable), based on the sparing use of devices and the employment of repetition. Here, the density and complexity of the texture combined with significant (in comparison to earlier works) chromatics are truly impressive.
