It is often said that we live in an age of countertenors. One of the most celebrated representatives of that age is without doubt Jakub Józef Orliński. He is a superstar, who arouses global attention not only with his voice, but also with his incredible energy and enthusiasm. He shatters stereotypes about ‘serious music’, sharing with listeners his wide range of interests in music and… dance. He works with leading early music ensembles, although he is not averse to new music. On a disc recently recorded with pianist Michał Biel, meanwhile, he promotes Polish art song from the nineteenth century to the present day.
To the Warsaw audience, he will present an extended programme illustrating the revolution that took place in seventeenth-century Italian music. The emergence and development of new genres of solo vocal music – including opera and cantata – were accompanied by a fresh look at the human voice and its technical and expressive capacities. The body of repertoire composed at that time –fortunately largely intact – still remains not entirely explored. In a cross-section programme, the famous countertenor will present many less familiar examples of those genres, including works possibly never performed in Poland before.
