‘Classically on the Grass’ is a series of concerts held in August in the ‘Królikarnia’ Park, in front of the Xawery Dunikowski Museum of Sculpture in Warsaw, referring to the long and rich tradition of open-air music-making in many European capital cities. At midday on Sundays, the beautiful setting and informal atmosphere attract Varsovians in their droves to sit on blankets and deckchairs with their families and listen to classical music in these exceptional surroundings. The Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra has long participated in this event.

This summer, it will be playing Joseph Haydn’s Symphony in G minor ‘La Poule’ and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C major. The latter was controversial among critics of the time for its ‘uncomposed outbursts of wind instruments’ and was dubbed ‘Haydnesque’. This concert may prove to be a good opportunity to compare the styles of the two classics, in such a pleasant natural setting!
