Ewa Pobłocka

A prize-winner in the 10th Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw (1980), where she was also honoured with a Polish Radio Prize for the best performance of the mazurkas. She studied under the tutelage of Zbigniew Śliwiński and Jerzy Sulikowski at the State Higher School of Music in Gdańsk, from which she graduated with distinction in 1981. She pursued her postgraduate studies under Conrad Hansen in Hamburg, and attended tutorials taught by Jadwiga Sukiennicka, Rudolf Kerer, Tatiana Nikolayeva, and Martha Argerich. She was awarded First Prize in the Giovanni Battista Viotti International Music Competition in Vercelli (1977) and a gold medal in the International Festival of Young Laureates in Bordeaux (1979).

The pianist has performed in almost all European countries, as well as in both Americas, China, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and South Africa. She is a successful interpreter of chamber music. She has performed numerous premieres and made the first ever recordings of the works of a number of Polish contemporary composers, including Andrzej Panufnik, Witold Lutosławski, Paweł Szymański, and Paweł Mykietyn. The artist’s discography comprises almost 50 albums released on such labels as Deutsche Grammophon, Pony Canyon, Victor JVC, Polskie Nagrania “Muza”, the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, CD Accord, and BeArTon. She is the first Polish pianist in history to record both volumes of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Das wohltemperierte Klavier.

Ewa Pobłocka is also a widely respected teacher – she conducts a piano class at the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, and has taught master classes in Canada, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, China, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, and Norway. She has been a jury member in many national and foreign piano competitions (including in Warsaw, Tel Aviv and Hamamatsu). She is also a keen writer – in 2021, her first book, Forte-piano, was published. She has presented programmes on Johann Sebastian Bach’s music on Polish Radio 2 – Zacznij od Bacha (2020–2021) and Przypadki Bacha (2021).
