Piotr Beczała

Piotr Beczała is one of the industry’s most sought-after performers and a constant guest in the world’s leading opera houses. The Polish-born tenor is acclaimed not only for the beauty of his voice, but also for his ardent commitment to each character he portrays. In addition to his operatic work, he has performed much of the classical vocal canon with the world’s most distinguished orchestras and conductors.

In the 2024/2025 season, Piotr Beczała debuted at the Royal Opera House Muscat in Oman, performing in a semi-staged production of Giuseppe Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera. Subsequently, he returns to the Metropolitan Opera, starring Radamès in Michael Mayer’s spectacular new staging of Verdi’s Aida. He then appears at the Wiener Staatsoper for two iconic roles: Mario Cavaradossi in Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca and Manrico in Verdi’s Il trovatore. At the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich he portrays Don José in Georges Bizet’s Carmen and reprises his acclaimed interpretation of the Richard Wagner’s titular knight Lohengrin. He brings this part also to Opernhaus Zürich and to the Bayreuth Festspiele. He portraits the Prince in Antonín Dvořák’s Rusalka at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and concludes his season at the Salzburger Festspiele with the title role of Umberto Giordano’s Andrea Chénier in a concert performance.

Piotr Beczała’s eventful concert season includes a notable performance of Anton Bruckner’s Te Deum at the Stiftsbasilika Sankt Florian in Linz, commemorating this composer’s 200th anniversary of birth with the Bruckner Orchester Linz under the baton of Markus Poschner. He performs with the Orquesta Nacional de España in Madrid featuring a Symphonic Cycle of Ferenc Liszt, Pilar Jurado and Johannes Brahms. He then returns to the Salzburger Festspiele to perform Verdi’s La traviata in concert version, followed by a summer concert in Schönbrunn, Vienna. In recitals in Bern, Sofia and Warsaw, he is accompanied by pianist Sarah Tysman. The artist embarks on a major European tour commemorating the 100th anniversary of Giacomo Puccini’s death, featuring ten performances across Spain, Poland, Lithuania and Germany. Further, he made his Carnegie Hall debut in a recital of songs by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninov and Richard Strauss, accompanied by pianist Helmut Deutsch.

In the 2023/2024 season, Piotr Beczała’s operatic engagements spanned prestigious venues worldwide, including Opéra national de Paris (title part in Wagner’s Lohengrin), Metropolitan Opera and Royal Opera House (as Don José in Bizet’s Carmen), Wiener Staatsoper (as Faust in Charles Gounod’s opera and as Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca) and Opernhaus Zürich (as Prince Sou-Chong in Franz Lehár’s Das Land des Lächelns). In the extensive concert calendar, a highlight of the season was the artist’s performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 under the baton of Andris Nelsons at Leipzig’s Gewandhaus, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the work’s composition.

Since his debut as Duke of Mantua (Verdi’s Rigoletto) in 2006, Piotr Beczała has been a regular guest at the Metropolitan Opera. Since then, he has sung Prince (Dvořák’s Rusalka), Edgardo (Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor), Rodolfo (Puccini’s La Bohème), Vaudémont (Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta), Riccardo (Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera) as well as title roles in Charles Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette and Faust. In 2011, he accompanied the MET to Japan and in 2012 made his role debut as Grieux in Jules Massenet’s Manon. In 2016, he made his debut as Lohengrin at the Semperoper Dresden alongside Anna Netrebko under the musical direction of Christian Thielemann. As the eponymous Werther in Massenet’s opera, he performed at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw.

Piotr Beczała is a sought-after concert and Lied singer. In 2020–2021, he performed with Sondra Radvanovsky at Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, gave concerts in Vienna, Warsaw, and Bilbao, and joined Plácido Domingo for a gala at the Bolshoi Theatre. He performed Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde in Madrid, Verdi’s Messa da Requiem at the Grafenegg Festival, and performed with Camilla Nylund at the Brixen Classics festival.

Piotr Beczała has released two solo albums for Deutsche Grammophon, My Heart’s Delight (2013) and The French Collection (2015). In 2012, New Year’s Eve concerts at the Semperoper Dresden under the baton of Christian Thielemann were released on CD and DVD (Deutsche Grammophon). A DVD of his stunning debut in the title role in Lohengrin was released in 2017. His first solo album Vincerò! was released in 2020 on Pentatone. His latest album, Romances, featuring collaboration with the renowned Lied pianist Helmut Deutsch, showcases a compilation of Rachmaninov’s and Tchaikovsky’s songs.

In 2014, Piotr Beczała received the ECHO Klassik Award as ‘Singer of the Year’ as well as the Opus Klassik Award in the same category in 2021.
