Ludwig van Beethoven was regarded as a revolutionary (but also an eccentric) in his time, while for subsequent generations he became the epitome of the Classical (and, for many, of what was finest in music). The turbulent reception history of his monumental Symphony No. 9 in D minor proves that the significance of a work is never defined once and for all. It has fascinated not only musicians and listeners with different tastes, but also representatives of different political options and adherents of extreme ideologies. Along the way, it has encountered both nationalism and hope-giving universalism. Today, one of the themes of the Symphony’s finale, considered by some of Beethoven’s contemporaries to be a sign of extravagance, is one of the most recognisable melodies in Western musical culture and is known as the anthem of the European Union.

Martin Platz

Tenor Martin Platz studied voice with Martin Hummel at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg. He also attended masterclasses led by Margreet Honig and Peter Nelson, among others, and is now supervised by Tilman Lichdi.

The artist is a permanent member of the opera ensemble at the Staatstheater Nürnberg, where he has appeared in major Mozart roles, including Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) and Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) as well as in the haute-contre parts in Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Platée and Les Indes galantes. He sang the title role in the world premiere of Anno Schreier’s opera Turing. Claudio Monteverdi’s Orfeo was released as an opera film with Martin Platz in the title role in a production by Bayerischer Rundfunk.

The tenor is also a sought-after concert soloist. In 2022, he made his debut at the Salzburger Festspiele under the baton of Jordi Savall, returning there in 2024 for Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. He has also appeared at the Styriarte in Graz, Beethovenfest Bonn, Festival Berlioz - La Côte-Saint-André, Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci, Dresdner Musikfestspiele, and in concert halls: Philharmonie de Paris, Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, Philharmonie im Gasteig in Munich and Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, among others. He has worked with conductors such as Philippe Herreweghe, Joana Mallwitz, Christopher Hogwood, Bernhard Labadie, Hansjörg Albrecht, Enoch zu Guttenberg, Marcus Bosch, Paul Agnew and Hervé Niquet. His recent CD releases include Johann Sebastian Bach’s Weihnachtsoratorium and Beethoven’s Missa solemnis with Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations.

The 2024/2025 season includes performances with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 under Jordi Savall in Vienna, Mozart’s Mass in C minor and Bach’s Mass in B minor during the Herrenchiemsee Festspiele under Kent Nagano. During the Mozartwoche 2025 in Salzburg Martin Platz presented his solo project ‘Seelenfrieden’ with the Lautten Compagney Berlin under Wolfgang Katschner. It was presented also at the Winter in Schwetzingen in Heidelberg, and will be performed at Musikfest ION Nürnberg
