The prize-winners in the 16th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition will perform before a Warsaw Philharmonic audience shortly after the conclusion of the competition in Poznań. The tradition of this musical tournament dates back to 1935, when the Warsaw Music Society went to great lengths to implement an idea devised by the outstanding virtuoso’s nephew, Adam Wieniawski: after eighteen months’ preparation, the first international violin competition devoted to the Polish violinist was held in Warsaw. The winner of that inaugural event was the young French violinist Ginette Neveu. Due to the Second World War, it was another seven- teen years before the second edition of the competition was held – in Poznań, in 1952 – launching a five-year cycle (with the exception of a four-year gap between 1977 and 1981), broken in 2021 by the coronavirus pandemic. The laureates of the previous fifteen editions – to mention but David Oistrakh, Wanda Wiłkomirska, Oleg Krysa, Alena Baeva, Agata Szymczewska, Bomsori Kim and Veriko Tchumburidze – are among the most renowned violinists in the world. In October 2022 that distinguished group will welcome the latest batch of fine virtuosos.
