Symphony in D Minor, a masterpiece conceived by Belgium-born César Franck, who spent most of his life in Paris, aroused considerable controversy at the time of its premiere (in 1888, two years before the composer’s death) – critics from the French capital accused it of being “too German”, which is quite an exaggeration, but the traditional cyclic symphonic form was admittedly not especially popular in France at the time. Although Franck’s attempt to overcome this prejudice proved unsuccessful; history did justice to this inspired Symphony of great melodic beauty and lavish harmonies, as it is a favourite of philharmonic audiences today.

There have been few works in the history of music so adored, so moving and yet so mysterious as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem. Did the composer really write this funeral mass, which he did not manage to finish, with his own death in mind, sensing his imminent demise? We will probably never find out, but this is how people in the 19th century wanted to see this work. It is said that the Latin funeral mass was finished by Mozart’s pupil F.X. Süssmayr. For over two centuries, the work has been the subject of numerous commentaries, both scholarly and purely speculative (and a great many alternative endings have been offered). And yet it continues to move listeners in the same way, and is one of the most important items in the concert and recording repertoire.

Gwilym Bowen

Acclaimed for the clarity and beauty of his singing and dynamic stage presence, British tenor Gwilym Bowen performs internationally with orchestras and ensembles of the highest calibre. Frequently described by reviewers as the “stand-out performance” (Independent, Guardian, Limelight Magazine) he is also a “Mozart tenor to the life and a little bit more” (The Arts Desk) and celebrated for his interpretations of the J.S. Bach Passions “the most immersed I’ve seen an Evangelist in the drama” (bachtrack.com).

With repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary his operatic highlights include Valletto in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Angers Nantes Opéra, Eurimaco and Giove in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria at The Grange Festival, Damon in Handel’s Acis and Galatea with the Academy of Ancient Music at Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice; forthcoming engagements include debuts at Opéra de Lille, Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing and Opéra de Montréal, and a return to The Grange Festival as Snout in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

In concert, Gwilym Bowen has sung the Evangelist in the Bach’s Passions numerous times from the UK to New Zealand, as well as Bach’s cantatas with Masaaki Suzuki at Lincoln Center in New York, Monteverdi and Heinrich Schütz with the Dunedin Consort, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio across Australia with Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with the City of London Sinfonia.

His recent recordings include Handel’s Brockes Passion, HWV 48 (BBC Music Magazine Choral Award 2020 nomination) and the world premiere recording of Dussek’s Messe solemnelle (2021 Gramophone Classical Music Award in the Choral category), both with the Academy of Ancient Music.
