The beginnings of the Warsaw Opera Orchestra are closely connected with the activities of the National Theatre under the leadership of Wojciech Bogusławski. At that time, the Orchestra was led by two outstanding Polish composers and conductors: Józef Elsner and Karol Kurpiński.

After the Second World War, the Orchestra embarked on the laborious task of expanding and steadily raising the standard of the institution, which eventually led to its becoming the largest opera orchestra in Poland, enabling it to undertake diverse and ambitious projects. Over the years many leading Polish conductors have collaborated with the Orchestra or served as its directors, among them Witold Rowicki, Bohdan Wodiczko, Jan Krenz, Jerzy Semkow, Henryk Czyż, Antoni Wit, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Antoni Wicherek, Kazimierz Kord, Tadeusz Wojciechowski, and Jacek Kaspszyk. Moreover, its musicians have frequently performed under the baton of renowned foreign conductors, including Nello Santi, Alberto Zedda, Heinz Fricke, Hans Swarowsky, Gerhard Geist, Jansug Kakhidze, George A. Albrecht, Werner Seitzer, Michael Zilm, Siegfried Köhler, Elio Boncompagni, José Maria Florencio Júnior, Tiziano Severini, Enrique Diemecke, Paul Connelly, Chikara Imamura, Marc Minkowski, and Valery Gergiev.

The ensemble has been a frequent presence in symphonic and oratorio concerts, performing works by such composers as Mozart, Rossini, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, and Mahler.

The orchestra will be led by Patrick Fournillier – since the 2020/2021 season, the Music Director of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera. He studied in Paris, at the Strasbourg Conservatoire, in Paris and at Mozarteum in Salzburg. In 1982, he won First Prize in the International Conducting Competition in Salzburg. He has performed in opera theatres in France, Italy and Spain.
