Norwegian baritone has appeared in numerous opera houses and festivals in Europe, Asia and North America. His operatic roles include Leporello and Masetto in Don Giovanni and Papageno in Die Zauberflöte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Marcello in Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème, Moralès in Georges Bizet’s Carmen, Aeneas in Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Peter in Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, Giove in Claudio Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria, Steward, Sergeant and Sentry in Dmitri Shostakovich Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Salieri in Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri, Tancredi in Monteverdi’s Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda and Mutter in Kurt Weill’s Die sieben Todsünden.
He has worked with conductors such as Paul Agnew, Fabio Biondi, Christophe Rousset, Alessandro De Marchi, Peter Dijkstra, Marcello Di Lisa, Rubén Dubrovsky, John Helmer Fiore, Antonino Fogliani, Simon Gaudenz, Andrew Parrott, Vasily Petrenko, Sébastien Rouland, Peter Schreier, Andreas Spering, Alexander Vedernikov, Philipp von Steinaecker and Joshua Weilerstein, among others.
Halvor Festervoll Melien is especially sought-after as a concert singer in Europe. His vast repertoire includes oratorios, masses, cantatas and song cycles. His most frequently performed works include Bach’s St Matthew Passion, St John Passion and Weihnachtsoratorium, George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, Joseph Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, Johannes Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem and Gustav Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn. He is also a leading interpreter of 20th- and 21st-century music, having participated in a number of world-premiers. He is an active Lied singer, performing frequently in recitals throughout Europe.
