Karol Kurpiński, a composer, conductor and impresario active during the early decades of the nineteenth century, left us piano music and orchestra works, a Clarinet Concerto that still holds its place in the repertoire, and a ‘military’ symphony devoted to the Battle of Borodino. Yet he saw his main calling to be the composing of (now forgotten) operas. The overture to one of them, the particularly popular The Charlatan, will remind us of this important strand to the work of the conductor and director of opera at the National Theatre.


The titular ‘eroe’ of Beethoven’s Third Symphony is not a specific figure, but an idea, while the music symbolises the universal message of good and beauty, love and self-sacrifice, that recurs in the ballet The Creatures of Prometheus (a motif from which is quoted in the Symphony’s finale), the opera Fidelio and the Ninth Symphony. This work adheres to a Classical design, but it also abounds in formal innovations; for listeners at the time, most controversial of all were the monumental scale of the Symphony and the power of its musical expression: pathos, passion, mighty sounds and dramatic contrasts.

After singing studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory with Margreet Honig, Judith van Wanroij obtained in 2004 the Advanced Opera Program Certificate at the De Nieuwe Opera Academy in Amsterdam and Hague and the First Prize in the competition Erna Spoorenberg Vocalist Presentatie. She began her career at the Opéra de Lyon in Jacques Offenbach’s La Perichole, Giacomo Puccini’s La boheme, Maurice Ravel’s L'enfant et les Sortileges, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Die Zauberflote, Bedřich Smetana’s Dvĕ vdovy, Claudio Monteverdi’s L'incoronazione di Poppea. She also performed the parts of Belinda in Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas in Vienna and Aix-en-Provence, as well as Echo in Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos at the Teatro Real in Madrid. At the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam Opera she performed several roles in the Monteverdi cycle and in Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Castor et Pollux.

She sang under the baton of conductors such as Christophe Rousset, Frans Brüggen, René Jacobs, Andrea Marcon, Hervé Niquet, Raphaël Pichon, Skip Sempé, William Christie, Guy van Waas, Leonardo García Alarcón, Laurence Equilbey, Marc Minkowski. The artist performs in the biggest concert halls, theaters and international festivals, such as Aix-en-Provence, Opéra Comique, in Vienna, Amsterdam, Strasbourg, Nantes, Nancy, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Versailles, Lyon, Essen, Brussels, Liege and others.

Her recent performances include, among others, roles in operas by Mozart: Countess in Le nozze di Figaro, Despina in Cosi fan tutte, Servilla in La clemenza di Tito, Ilia in Idomeneo, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, First Lady in Die Zauberflote, as well as Virtu and Damigella in Monteverdi’s L'incoronazione di Poppea, Junon in Rameau’s Platee, Sidonie and Lucinde in Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Armide, Female Chorus in Benjamin Britten’s Rape of Lucretia. Other appearances include title roles in Luigi Rossi’s Orfeo and Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne’s Phedre. Also, in concert versions: Camille in Antonio Salieri’s Les Horaces, Eurydice in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, Xaima in Charles Gounod’s Le tribut de Zamora, Henri Desmarets’ Didon and others.

Most recent performances and near future plans include: Mozart’s Die Zauberflote at Theater Basel and in a new production in Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and Nice, Camille Saint-Saëns’ La Princesse jaune with Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, Mozart’s Idomeneo with Les Talens Lyriques, Rameau’s Achante et Cephise with Les Ambassadeurs in Paris, Marin Marais’ Ariane et Bacchus with Concert Spirituel in Paris, César Franck’s Hulda with Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liege, Alban Berg’s Sieben Fruhe Lieder with Orchestre national de Lille, Jules Massenet’s Ariane with Münchner Rundfunkorchester, Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Medee with Concert Spirituel in Paris, Rameau’s Castor et Pollux in Budapest, Amsterdam, Paris and concert with the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw.
