The symphonic poem In the Forest (1901) by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, an outstanding painter and composer considered to be the father of Lithuanian art music, is still a fully Romantic landscape of nature, captivating with its tranquillity and mood. It displays Čiurlionis’s characteristic pictorial imagination and timbral sensitivity.

Richard Strauss’s opera Elektra (1908) is one of the finest achievements of this great German Romantic composer, who in this work, developing his ecstatic and monumental style inspired by Richard Wagner, entered the realm of musical expressionism. The symphonic suite from the opera was arranged by Manfred Honeck and Tomáš Ille in 2016.

Vytautas Bacevičius’s Symphony No. 6 (‘Cosmic’), from 1960, is considered the pinnacle of this Lithuanian composer’s late work, marked by his original theory of ‘cosmic music’. It is an avant-garde work, inspired in its modern sound by the style of Edgar Varèse, yet expressionistic in the spirit of Alexander Scriabin. Perhaps, however, the extraordinary, pulsating energy of this composition should rather be seen in the light of Bacevičius’s theory – as a sounding image of the cosmic process of shaping matter.

The Seventh Violin Concerto by Grażyna Bacewicz (1965), an outstanding Polish violinist and composer (and sister of Vytautas Bacevičius), perfectly combines the folkloric style previously associated with her with a modern, sonoristic language. It is a strikingly sounding piece, full of vital expression, with a bravura violin part.

Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra

The Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO), one of Lithuania’s most musical collectives, was founded in 1940 by Balys Dvarionas, a composer, pianist and conductor. From 1964 to 2015, the orchestra was led by Juozas Domarkas, and since 2015, Modestas Pitrėnas has served as its artistic director and principal conductor. Robertas Šervenikas is the orchestra’s second conductor, Juozas Domarkas is the honorary conductor and Victorien Vanoosten – the principal guest conductor.

The orchestra’s 84th season is marked by a number of significant musical events. One of these is the release of a historic for Lithuania CD album (record label Accentus Music): Amilcare Ponchielli’s opera I Lituani (The Lithuanians), which was an international success.

In the 2024/2025 season, the LNSO gave concerts with the renowned pianist Rafał Blechacz, participated in a concert performance of Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca with soprano Vida Miknevičiūtė, tenor Jonathan Tetelman, and bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel, and recorded Grażyna Bacewicz’s Concerto No. 7 for violin and orchestra with Polish violin virtuoso Janusz Wawrowski, conducted by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. The LNSO’s upcoming engagements include collaboration with one of today’s most sought-after violinists Christian Tetzlaff and the renowned tenor Joseph Calleja at the 29th Vilnius Festival, as well as tours in Poland and Latvia.

Having been an active participant in Lithuania’s cultural life for 85 years, the LNSO performs around 50 concerts in Lithuania and abroad every year. It has visited many European countries, Japan, South America and South Korea, and has given concerts in some of the most prominent concert venues of the world, including Musikverein in Vienna, the philharmonic halls of Cologne and Berlin, among many others. The LNSO has also performed at prestigious music festivals, such as the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Musica Romantica in Switzerland, the Warsaw Autumn International Festival of Contemporary Music, the Prague Spring, and elsewhere. The orchestra has performed with such important conductors as Jonas Aleksa, Mstislav Rostropovich, Krzysztof Penderecki, Christoph Eschenbach and soloists: Montserrat Caballé, Jessye Norman, Emil Gilels, Mūza Rubackytė, Mischa Maisky, and other illustrious artists.

Alongside the most famous classical repertoire, as an ambassador of the Lithuanian music, LNSO actively promotes Lithuanian composers: the orchestra is a regular participant of the international GAIDA Festival of contemporary music, it premieres works by Lithuanian composers, participates in recordings, and presents Lithuanian music in Euroradio live broadcasts.
