In an age when it is no longer the norm for children to duplicate their parents’ profession, it is not often that you find musical families performing in the world’s major concert halls. The piano duo made up of the two supremely talented brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen is an example of an exceptional phenomenon. Despite their young age, the pianists can boast numerous recordings for the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label. At the Warsaw Philharmonic, they will tackle the rarely performed Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra in A flat major by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. This was the second double concerto in the career of the 15-year-old genius, who often performed with his no less talented sister Fanny. The work’s presentation in Szczecin and Berlin aroused great interest in European salons in the talent of the young pianist and composer. His music later inspired Richard Strauss, before he became familiar with Richard Wagner’s theatrical experiments (less so with his philosophy). One of the most famous examples of Strauss’s paradox-laden operatic output is the modernist one-act Elektra. Known for the particularly demanding role of the main character, who is present on stage for almost its entire duration, this time the work will allow the singers to rest and will be heard in the form of a recently prepared orchestral suite.

Arthur Jussen

Lucas and Arthur Jussen are among the most sought-after piano duos of our time. Given their illustrious international careers, it is fair to say the Jussen brothers (born 1993 and 1996) are the Netherland’s pre-eminent ambassadors for classical music. With their energetic, almost symbiotic playing, their great refinement of sound, and gripping interpretations, they are praised vigorously by press and audiences alike.

The Jussen brothers have performed with orchestras internationally, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Budapest Festival Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. They collaborate with the renowned conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, Iván Fischer, Sir Neville Marriner, Andris Nelsons, Yannick Nezét-Séguin, Jukka-Pekka Saraste und Jaap van Zweden.

In the 2024/2025 season, the Jussen brothers will be Artists in Residence at the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo. Other highlights of the season include a European tour with the Gewandhausorchester. In addition to their debuts with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, reinvitations will take the Jussens back to perform with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Bamberger Symphoniker, Dresdner Philharmonie, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. In recital, they can be heard in Paris, Amsterdam, the Hague, London, Rome, Naples, Zürich, Mannheim, Stuttgart and Potsdam, among others.

Recording exclusively with Deutsche Grammophon since 2010, in 2015 their recording of Mozart’s piano concertos K. 365 and K. 242 together with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Sir Neville Marriner was released. The Jussen brothers also recorded Francis Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra and Camille Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Stéphane Deneve, and in 2019 they released a recording of concertos and chorales by Johann Sebastian Bach with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. On The Russian Album (2021) they interpret works for two pianos by Sergei Rachmaninov, Igor Stravinsky, and Anton Arensky. The latest addition to their discography is Dutch Masters (April 2022) which is devoted to works by Dutch composers, in collaboration with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.
