Daniel Müller-Schott and the Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Sopot will be performing Camille Saint-Saëns’s First Cello Concerto (1872). This composition, in three movements, but performed as a formal continuum, never ceases to delight with its masterful sense of thematic integration, colourful orchestration and elaborate virtuosic cello part.
The Divertimento for String Orchestra, from 1939, is a work that Bartók wrote to commission for Paul Sacher, shortly before he left fascist-riddled Europe for the United States. Although this work represents a nod to the past, evoking the Baroque model of the concerto grosso, it does not eschew original musical means, with the result that this glance back remains thoroughly modern and… Bartókian.
Our programme is enriched with an interesting musical accent in the form of a contemporary work by the esteemed Ukrainian composer Victoria Polevá.
