Okka von der Damerau
Okka von der Damerau has established herself as one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of her generation. With her powerful, nuanced voice and her clear, natural diction, the Hamburg-born singer senses the authentic tone in every character, which connects her with her audience.
In the 2025/2026 season, Okka von der Damerau returns to La Scala in Milan as Fricka (Richard Wagner’s Rheingold and Walküre) and also performs this role in concert with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Daniel Harding in Rome. One focus of the season is the work of Gustav Mahler: at the Musikfest Berlin she sings Das Lied von der Erde with the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, followed by performances of the Symphony No. 2 with the Czech Philharmonic and with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra under Karina Canellakis, as well as Symphony No. 3 with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra under Christoph König and in Munich with the Bayerisches Staatsorchester at the gala concert celebrating Zubin Mehta’s 90th birthday.
The artist was a troupe member of the Bayerische Staatsoper for many years and was celebrated as Waltraute (Wagner’s Götterdämmerung), Erda (Wagner’s Rheingold, Siegfried), Azucena (Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore) and Charlotte (Die Soldaten by Bernd Alois Zimmermann). Her artistic journey then took her to the greatest opera stages, including the Wiener Staatsoper, Opéra national de Paris, Teatro Real in Madrid, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Semperoper Dresden and Bayreuther Festspiele. In recent years, Okka von der Damerau has made several highly acclaimed role debuts: as Brünnhilde (Walküre), Ariadne (title role in Richard Strauss’ opera), Ježibaba (Antonín Dvořák’s Rusalka) and Venus (Wagner’s Tannhäuser). Another important role in her extensive repertoire is Brangäne (Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde) in Munich under the baton of Simone Young, and with the Los Angeles Philharmonic conducted by Gustavo Dudamel.
Besides her various opera engagements, concert stage is also an important component of her artistic work. Okka von der Damerau works with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Wiener Philharmoniker, Berliner Philharmoniker, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and Staatskapelle Berlin. She performed Lili Boulanger’s Psalm CXXX under the baton of Edward Gardner at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder under the baton of Daniel Barenboim at the Salzburger Festspiele, and Anton Bruckner’s Mass No. 3 in F minor at the Tokyo Spring Festival. Her concert repertoire also includes Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder, as well as Verdi’s Messa da Requiem.
In 2013, Okka von der Damerau received the Festspielpreis of the Münchner Opernfestspiele. At the International Singing Competition for Wagnerian Voices in Venice in 2006, she was awarded the Special Jury Prize.
