Máté Herczeg
Hungarian baritone Máté Herczeg graduated from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest (class of Péter Fried) and the Mozarteum University Salzburg (class of Kai Röhrig, Karoline Gruber and Rosamund Gilmore as well as under Christoph Strehl). He has been recognised in various competitions, including the 2018 Éva Andor Singing Competition in Budapest (2nd Prize) and the 2016 József Simándy International Singing Competition in Szeged (Special Prize).
Already during his studies, Máté Herczeg made his debut as a soloist on the opera stages of the Salzburg Festival and Müpa Budapest. After graduating from the Mozarteum University Salzburg, in 2023 he returned to the Salzburg Festival where he sang the leading role of Vlad in the world premiere of the new opera Ping Pong, composed for the festival by Mischa Tangian. In 2024, the artist joined the Accademia del Belcanto ‘Rodolfo Celletti’ as part of the Young Artist Program of the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca, Italy. That year, he sung the solo bass part in George Frideric Handel’s Messiah at the Great Hall of the Mozarteum Salzburg, performed as Friedrich in Richard Wagner’s opera Das Liebesverbot, and in the title role of Vanni Moretto’s opera Der Wassermann.
His operatic repertoire includes Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (Papageno), Gaetano Donizetti’s Don Pasquale (Malatesta), Jacques Offenbach’s Orphée aux enfers (Jupiter), Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel (Peter), Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci (Silvio) and Tan Dun’s Tea: A Mirror of the Soul (Seikyo).
