Vimbayi Kaziboni
Zimbabwean-born conductor Vimbayi Kaziboni is widely sought-after for his depth of approach, interpretive imagination, and expressivity, as well as his innovative and thoughtful curation. He has led many critically lauded performances with orchestras across the globe, performing at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center (New York), Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), Royal Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Berliner Philharmonie, Elbphilharmonie (Hamburg), Philharmonie de Paris, Royal Festival Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall at Southbank Centre (London).
As the recipient of the 2024 Ditson Conductor’s Award, Vimbayi Kaziboni joins a list of laureates that include conducting luminaries and personal artistic heroes such as Leonard Bernstein, Leopold Stokowski, James DePreist, Marin Alsop, Michael Tilson Thomas, and others.
The conductor has led some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world that include the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, l’Orchestre de Chambre de Geneve, Ensemble intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, International Contemporary Ensemble, Klangforum Wien, and the London Sinfonietta. Collaborations with acclaimed soloists have included Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Tabea Zimmermann, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Claire Chase and Steven Schick, among others.
This season debuts include performances with the SWR Symphonieorchester, Musikkollegium Winterthur, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai, New World Symphony and the American Composers Orchestra as well as return engagements with the BBC Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Klangforum Wien, International Contemporary Ensemble, Ensemble Modern and Ensemble Modern Orchestra.
Newly appointed conductor-in-residence of Klangforum Wien from January 2024, Vimbayi Kaziboni also currently serves as artistic advisor of the Boston Lyric Opera, music director of the Composers Conference, artist-in-residence with the International Contemporary Ensemble, and professor of orchestral studies at Boston Conservatory at Berklee where he was the 2019 Teacher of the Year. A former Fulbright Programme fellow, Vimbayi Kaziboni holds degrees from the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles and the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt (HfMDK).
